EMPOWERING GHANAIAN GIRLS THROUGH FOOTBALL: GIMAT VOLUNTEER NETWORK AT THE AFRICAN WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT IN KENYA

In June 2025, GIMAT Volunteer Network proudly facilitated Ghana’s participation in the Africa Women’s Homeless Football Cup held in Nairobi, Kenya, by sponsoring five young women to represent the nation on this transformative journey. This tournament, hosted under the Homeless World Cup initiative, brought together teams from across Africa to celebrate the power of football in fostering empowerment, resilience, and unity. The Ghanaian players are Nura, Mariama, Eva, and Priscilla Kenkeba, shared life-changing experiences that highlighted the impact of the event.

Mariama:

Nairobi taught me so much about teamwork, resilience, and cultural diversity. Connecting with people from different backgrounds and growing personally was an amazing opportunity. I’ve learned the importance of adaptability and perseverance, and I know these lessons will help me overcome challenges in the future. Thank you for giving me this chance!

Eva:

This was my first time flying, and it was so thrilling! From the diverse foods to the warmth of the people, Nairobi was full of surprises. The tournament itself was intense and inspiring, especially hearing stories of players who’ve overcome incredible challenges. It reminded me of the power of hope and empowerment. Even though the cold weather was tough to handle, the experience was worth every moment. I’m so grateful to GIMAT and the Homeless World Cup Foundation for this opportunity.

Nura:

Traveling from Ghana to Nairobi was an unforgettable adventure. Watching women from different nations play with such passion and determination was inspiring. Football brought us joy, hope, and unity. I’ll always cherish the fun moments, the friendships I made, and the chance to be part of something so empowering. Thank you, GIMAT and the Homeless World Cup Foundation, for making this possible.

Priscilla Kenkeba:

My time in Nairobi will always stay with me. I learned about unity, resilience, and believing in myself and my team. The tournament helped me grow in confidence and gave me hope for the future. Meeting people from all over the world showed me that, despite our differences, we share similar struggles and dreams. Thank you, GIMAT and the Homeless World Cup Foundation, for changing my life and making this journey possible. ~Through football, we gained more than just skills—we found strength, hope, and a sense of belonging. This experience has empowered us to dream bigger and work harder to inspire change in our communities.

Conclusion Through this initiative, GIMAT and the Homeless World Cup Foundation not only enabled these young women to compete on an international stage but also empowered them with experiences and skills that will resonate throughout their lives. This effort underscores the role of sports in addressing societal challenges, fostering inclusion, and inspiring hope for marginalized communities.
